Dr. Yildiz has entered first 60 in Turkey at the University Entrance Exam and been awarded for her academic success since the age of 16. She completed her medical training at the Hacettepe University, Medical School (Eng) and her psychiatric residency at the Dokuz Eylül University in Turkey. After completing research fellowships at the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research, University of Minnesota; McLean Hospital Brain Imaging Center and Massachusetts General Hospital Bipolar Clinic, Harvard Medical School, she returned to Turkey and started first proof-of-concept study in bipolar acute mania. This study, published at the Archives of General Psychiatry in 2008, represents a rare example of how basic neuroscience can lead to the hypothesis-driven investigation of a novel treatment principle in a psychiatric disorder. After completing this project in 2006 she returned to United States and worked as a faculty at the Harvard Medical School Brain Imaging Center and International Consortium for Bipolar Disorder Research Program. Her areas of interest include mechanism of action of anti-manic agents; evidence synthesis of psychotropic drugs, and neuroimaging.
Dr.Yildiz is the recipient of the American Psychiatric Association-APA/Astra Zeneca Young Minds in Psychiatry Award (2004) and Fellowship Award from the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology-ECNP (2002). She is also recipient of research grants from the Stanley Medical Research Institute (2002, 2003), Pfizer-USA (Independent Investigator Award, 2002), Harvard Medical School, Stanley Foundation Bipolar Research Center (2003), and International Sleep Research Foundation-USA (2004). Dr. Yildiz has authored more than eighty articles in peer-reviewed journals and has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international scientific meetings. She is in the editorial board of several international journals, including the ECNP official journal, European Neuropsychopharmacology and International Journal of Bipolar Disorders. Dr.Yildiz is Meta-analysis Section Editor of the Annals of Genereal Psychiatry. Dr.Yildiz is the first editor of “The Bipolar Book: History, Neurobiology, and Treatment” recently published by the Oxford University Press. Dr.Yildiz’ biography is included in the Marquis Who's Who in the World since 2009. Her recent research series on evidence-based hierarchies on comparative efficacy of antimanic treatments and rising placebo responses associated with bipolar mania trials, using advanced meta-analytic techniques was presented at the most recent Annual Meetings of the ECNP, APA, Society of Biological Psychiatry, and American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology. Dr. Yildiz currently works as the Professor of Psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry, Dokuz Eylül University and the Harvard University, McLean Hospital, International Consortium for Bipolar Disorder Research. She is the President of Institutional Review Board at the Dokuz Eylül University and a member of the Scientific Advisory Panel at the ECNP since 2009. Prof.Ayşegül Yildiz is the Founding Director of the Depression & Bipolar Disorder Foundation, DUVAK in Turkey. She is married and has one child.
